I spent a full month road-tripping through Wisconsin and was genuinely surprised by how beautiful and varied it was! From tranquil forests and hidden lake islands to quirky towns and Insta-worthy waterfalls, I’m sharing my favorite spots…

I absolutely adored this ultra-scenic country! It was home to stunning natural landscapes including rocky shorelines, sandy beaches, ancient forests, charming lighthouses, quaint towns, unspoilt state parks, cherry orchards, and a vibrant arts community all set against the gorgeous backdrop of Lake Michigan and Green Bay.

On my trip I followed US‑141 and WI‑57 south from my previous stop at Marinette County and then northeast for just over 2.5 hours to reach Egg Harbor which was the heart of the Door Peninsula. The region felt charming, coastal, and artsy – a relaxed mix of scenic landscapes and creative energy.

I spent a week exploring the Peninsula State Park’s picturesque trails and the historic Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, enjoying the arts at the Peninsula Players Theatre, and sampling local wines at Door Peninsula Winery.

I explored the quaint waterfront town of Fish Creek, took a scenic ferry ride to Washington Island where I strolled lavender fields and saw the stunning Norwegian-style Stavkirke, and wrapped it all up with a relaxing afternoon at Nicolet Beach.

I thought this stunning group of 21 untouched islands in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore was absolutely extraordinary — with their untamed, rugged beauty, historic lighthouses, sparkling Lake Superior waters, and the truly magical sea caves!

From Amnicon Falls State Park, I followed the lakeshore northeast for just under 1.5 hours to reach Bayfield where I based myself for a night at the cute Bayfield Inn before I caught the ferry to Madeline Island. I loved how the islands felt untamed and serene – they were a nature-lover’s paradise with a peaceful off-grid vibe!

I was able to reserve a remote campsite on Stockton Island — not always easy to arrange, but it was totally worth the extra effort. I joined a guided sea kayaking tour to explore the dramatic sea caves near Devils Island which was a challenging but unforgettable experience!

I explored forested and lakeside trails on Stockton Island, took a scenic boat tour to the historic Raspberry and Sand Island lighthouses, discovered secluded stretches of beach, and enjoyed a laid-back picnic beside the clear waters of Lake Superior.

Locals told me that when conditions allow (which doesn’t happen every year), the ice caves transformed into magical frozen chambers during winter months (January to early March) — filled with glistening icicles and shimmering ice walls!
