19 Most Breathtaking Places To Explore In Mexico

Mexico is home to some of the most stunning beauty spots in the world! I went beyond the high-octane resorts and discovered secluded coastlines, ancient ruins, and extraordinary islands. From living here for year, here are my favorite spots I’d love to share with you…

1. Yucatán Peninsula

My photo of Playa de Carmen – the coastal views was so Insta-worthy!

I’m a huge fan of this very alluring area filled with unique limestone geology, incredible cenotes (natural sinkholes), stunning coastlines, and pristine beaches, which includes the popular resort of Playa del Carmen. The region is also rich in Mayan heritage, with extraordinary ruins such as Chichén Itzá and the ancient city of Tulum. It lies on the southeastern tip of Mexico, extending between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

Riviera Maya is one of the most well-known districts of the peninsula and one of the more chic areas, famous for its jaw-dropping boho resorts, seriously Insta-worthy villas, and gleaming yachts. Still, I personally think it only represents a small portion of what the Yucatan can offer.

I also really enjoyed visiting the area’s national parks, swimming in the seriously jaw-dropping underground lakes, otherwise known as cenotes (Gran Cenote was my favorite!), going on a dolphin-watching boat tour and celebrating the incredible two-day festival famous Day of the Dead in the state’s capital, Merida (which was held in November).

My favorite highlights…

  • Staying at the gorgeously styled Era Hotel & Spa Tulum was a dream – I loved the boho vibes and the relaxing onsite spa and wellness area.
  • Eating at the trendy Kuuk Restaurant, which was housed in a colonial mansion and served up modern twists on traditional Yucatan cuisine, the cold raspberry and hibiscus soup was both unique and divine!
  • Catching the sunset in the dreamy small fishing village of San Crisanto was an Instgram-worthy moment! I sat on the semi-virgin white sand beach with swaying palm trees, and surrounding lush mangroves and saw the sky transform into a beautiful palette of oranges!

2. Oaxaca City

I absolutely loved this world heritage city which is filled with colorful colonial architecture, artisan and craft markets, ancient ruins, and a rich indigenous culture, surrounded by lush mountains and stunning coastlines.

Located in a valley in the southern part of this country, I also found it had such an enticing, bohemian and small-town vibe where tradition meets creativity with striking street art, mezcal tastings, and soulful music that echo through its wonderful cobblestone streets.

Oaxaca is also a gastronomic haven and I can’t get enough of the incredible food here as well as all the awesome cooking schools! On my trip, I explored the colonial architecture, the artisan-filled Oaxaca Artisan Market and discovered the surrounding areas which are filled with deserted white-sand beaches, lush forests, and stunning waterfalls!
