What to Do in Courmayeur in Autum

There’s a moment in early autumn, just as the larch trees begin to turn, when Courmayeur becomes something rare: a high-mountain retreat without the rush. The trails are quieter, the light is softer, and Mont Blanc looms above it all like a silent guardian wrapped in the season’s shifting moods.

Set in Italy’s Aosta Valley, Courmayeur is best known for its winter glamour and alpine skiing. But come September and October, when the crowds have gone and the forests start to blaze with colour, it reveals a slower, more grounded side, one that’s perfect for hiking, unwinding, and reconnecting with nature at a gentler pace.

I’ve been to Courmayeur a few times over the years, but only once in autumn, and it was something truly special: the quiet, the colours, the crisp air, it all felt like discovering a different place entirely.

Where is Courmayeur?

Courmayeur is a charming alpine town in northwestern Italy, nestled at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. It’s located in the Aosta Valley, near the French and Swiss borders, and just a 30-minute drive through the Mont Blanc Tunnel from Chamonix, France. The nearest major Italian city, and airport, is Turin (about 2 hours by car), while Milan is around 2.5–3 hours away.

Whether you’re combining it with a trip through northern Italy or visiting from France, Courmayeur is easy to reach and offers a spectacular mountain escape.

Mindful Hiking Beneath the Peaks

Autumn in Courmayeur isn’t about conquering summits: it’s about walking with purpose and presence. The Val Ferret and Val Vény valleys are perfect for this kind of hiking: wide glacial plains edged by golden larch forests, dramatic rock faces, and crisp air that sharpens the senses.

How to get there: both Val Ferret and Val Vény are easily accessible by car from Courmayeur town centre (about 10–15 minutes). In autumn, you can usually drive and park directly in the valleys, as the summer shuttle services are not running.

One standout route in Val Ferret is the trail from Planpincieux to Rifugio Bonatti, a steady climb that rewards you with views across the Mont Blanc massif. Even better, it’s quiet in autumn: no summer hikers, no trail runners, just the rustle of leaves and the sound of distant waterfalls.

  • It is recommended to follow trail 28A to reach Rifugio Bonatti, starting from Lavachey.
  • The trail is suitable for hikers with a good level of fitness, due to some steep sections.
  • It is advisable to check the weather conditions before setting out.
  • During the summer, Rifugio Bonatti offers both restaurant service and overnight accommodation.

If you prefer solitude and soft terrain, try the gentle loops near Lago d’Arpy, about a 30-minute drive away: on a still October day, the lake becomes a mirror, reflecting larches in full flame. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop, breathe, and just be.

The Skyway Monte Bianco: A Ride Into the Silence

No matter how many times you’ve seen the Alps, nothing prepares you for the Skyway Monte Bianco. The rotating cable car climbs to 3,466 metres in just minutes, arriving at Punta Helbronner with staggering views across the roof of Europe.

In autumn, the experience feels even more surreal: the crowds are gone, the peaks dusted with the season’s first snow, and the silence, up there, above the clouds, is total. Spend time on the panoramic terrace, visit the crystal exhibition, or just sip a coffee and watch the weather roll in: it’s a different kind of altitude high.

For something truly unique, also visit the Alpine Botanical Garden Saussurea, located near the Pavillon station of the Skyway Monte Bianco. One of Europe’s highest botanical gardens, it showcases a rare collection of alpine plants with stunning views across glaciers and peaks.

Photography Tours, Truffle-Hunting & Wine Tastings

October is ideal for guided photo workshops capturing autumn foliage, as well as truffle-hunting excursions and wine tastings in local wineries. These experiences blend culture and nature beautifully.

Broader Aosta Valley Highlights in Autumn

If you have extra time to explore the region, don’t miss:

  • Tor des Géants Ultra-Race (14-20 September)
An epic endurance race starting and finishing in Courmayeur, with routes spanning 330 km and 24,000 m of elevation gain. Even as a spectator, it’s a spectacular display of mountain stamina.
  • Plaisirs de Culture (20-28 September)
Free or low-cost access to castles, museums, and evening concerts across the Aosta Valley, spotlighting the region’s rich heritage.

Thermal Waters and Alpine Wellness

Courmayeur invites stillness in autumn, and there’s no better place to embrace it than QC Terme Pré-Saint-Didier: this historic spa complex is tucked into a wooded gorge just outside town, with steam rising from thermal pools as leaves fall gently around you.

Slip into the outdoor hot tubs with views of Mont Blanc, then drift between saunas, waterfalls, and silence rooms. It’s more than just wellness—it’s a kind of seasonal reset.

Autumn on the Plate: Local Food Rituals

This is also the time of year when Courmayeur’s food scene comes into its own: truffle, chestnuts, mushrooms, aged cheeses, and hearty mountain polenta take centre stage on local menus. Autumn brings depth to the flavours, and with fewer visitors around, the restaurants feel more like they’re cooking for themselves.

Try Ristorante La Terrazza for refined alpine cuisine with valley views, or head to Bistro Royal for something elegant and unexpected: on a chilly evening, curling up with a glass of Torrette Supérieur red wine is the perfect way to end the day.

A Town that Breathes at Its Own Pace

Courmayeur in autumn feels honest: the shutters are still open, the cafés still buzzing, but without the performance of peak season. You can linger longer. Speak more Italian. Get a table without booking. Ask questions. Walk slowly.

It’s the perfect base for those who want to feel the Alps rather than race through them: whether you’re here for high trails, thermal waters, mountain cuisine, or simply the golden light that hits Mont Blanc just before dusk, autumn in Courmayeur offers something few alpine towns do: space. Not just physical space on the trails, but mental space too.

Planning Tips for Autumn Visitors

  • Check current year dates: Many events happen annually but can shift slightly. Always verify on official tourism sites or event pages.
  • Seasonal rhythm: Late September through mid-October is lively, with shops, lifts, and restaurants open. After mid-November, the quieter off-season begins.
  • Combine activities: Imagine starting your day with a trail run or hike, relaxing in thermal baths, then finishing with the Food Market or Chestnuts Festival.
