Sea Turtle Hatchlings Spotted at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives – Maldives Virtual Tour

A magical moment is unfolding on the shores of Alila Kothaifaru Maldives as the island welcomes the next generation of ocean life, sea turtle hatchlings. With four active sea turtle nests currently incubating on the island, guests and marine enthusiasts alike are eagerly awaiting the upcoming emergence, anticipated to coincide with the next full moon.

Following a recent hatch, the remaining three nests all belong to Green Sea Turtles, one of the largest sea turtle species found in tropical and subtropical oceans. Known for their smooth, heart-shaped shells and herbivorous diet of seagrass and algae, these gentle giants play a crucial role in maintaining the health of coral reefs and marine ecosystems. While one Hawksbill turtle nest is suspected, it is yet to be confirmed.

“Sea turtles are fascinating creatures, they lead mostly solitary lives and can migrate thousands of kilometers between feeding and nesting grounds,” shares Fernanda Cortina Escalante, Alila’s Marine Biologist. “It’s truly special to witness this part of their life cycle so up close on our island.”

Turtle reproduction is a delicate process. These ancient mariners returning to the same shores where their lives began, to lay their eggs. Females come ashore under the cover of night to lay their eggs in carefully dug nests in the sand. The incubation period lasts 45 to 70 days, after which the hatchlings instinctively make their way to the sea.

Green turtles can live up to 60-80 years, grow as large as 1.5 meters, and weigh up to 300kg. At rest, they can hold their breath for up to five hours, a testament to their remarkable adaptation to ocean life.

With conservation at its core, the resort is committed to protecting its natural surroundings and working closely with the in-house marine biologist to monitor and safeguard the nesting sites.

“A new generation of sea turtles has officially begun its journey into the ocean, with 61 tiny hatchlings recently ‘checking out of our resort and making their way from nest to sea,” shares Thomas Weber, General Manager of Alila Kothaifaru Maldives.

“Moments like these remind us of the beauty and responsibility we have in preserving this incredible ecosystem. It’s an honour to be part of the journey of these magnificent creatures.”

Guests’ staying at the resort may have the chance to witness a live hatching, a once-in-a-lifetime moment of nature at its most raw and beautiful.
