History of Squibb Park

Squibb Park was created in honor of Dr. Edward Robinson Squibb (1819-1900), founder of Squibb Pharmaceuticals. Squibb, a Brooklyn-based physician, became a leading figure in anesthesia and advocated for pure medicines.

His first laboratory was located behind the present playground, where his name can still be seen on chimneys. The park was created in the 1940s under the direction of Robert Moses. It was officially named Edward Robinson Squibb Park in 1959.

The playground, located below street level, offers classic equipment such as swings, climbing frames, a sandbox and a basketball court, as well as green spaces with pine and plane trees. A memorial plaque commemorates Squibb’s contributions to science. (Source: Official Brooklyn Bridge Park website)
