With a public transport system as good as Japan’s, there really isn’t much needed for private transfers or travel. Public transport across Japan is convenient and efficient, and in many places, very affordable. For example – if you’re looking to access Tokyo’s metro, you can get an all-inclusive (Metro & Toei Subway) 72hr pass for just 1,500Y. That’s US$10 for three days of unlimited metro rides – it doesn’t get more affordable than that!
If you’re travelling around the country solo and are planning on heading multiple cities, you may want to weigh up if a JR Pass is worth investing in. While they’re more expensive now than they were in previous years, if you’re planning on making multiple return journeys across the country on trains like the Shinkansen, you may find that something like a 7-day JR Pass (50,000Y / US$335) quickly becomes the more economical option than buying individual train tickets.
