The latest addition to Disney’s long line of live-action remakes, Lilo & Stitch (2025), landed on Singaporean shores last week with a splash at Golden Village Vivocity during the gala premiere last week. We spotted several fans decked in Lilo or Stitch-inspired outfits, specially dressed up for the special day to catch the latest edition of their favourite Disney characters.

Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and starring newcomer Maia Kealoha as the spirited young Lilo, this remake attempts to capture the charm of the 2002 animated original while introducing the story to a new generation.
As someone who went in fresh, without having seen the original film, this live-action adaptation stood on its own as a funny, heartwarming, and visually delightful ride.
At the centre of the story is Lilo, a quirky, lonely girl growing up in Hawaii, and her chaotic bond with Stitch, a mischievous alien fugitive genetically engineered for destruction. What unfolds is a tale of belonging, second chances, and unconventional family, themes that remain as resonant now as they were two decades ago.

While reactions to the film globally have been mixed, the Singapore premiere audience appeared charmed. I for one found the film to be one of the more coherent and emotionally satisfying entries in Disney’s live-action catalog.
Stitch is irresistibly adorable and likely to be a hit among dog lovers and pet owners alike. His interactions with Lilo are as fun as they are touching, and their evolving relationship is the emotional heartbeat of the film.

My understanding from other reviewers is that the live-action remake has largely stayed loyal to the original script. It’s clear Disney played it safe, but for many, including families and younger audiences unfamiliar with the original, that might be just right.
The soundtrack blends classic Elvis Presley hits with new arrangements produced by Bruno Mars, lending the film a nostalgic yet contemporary vibe. Highlights include a duet rendition of Aloha ʻOe by Maia Kealoha and Sydney Agudong, which adds a poignant cultural touch.
With the June school holidays coming up, Lilo & Stitch is a well-timed release. The message of “ohana means family” and how it means nobody gets left behind or forgotten, rings out clearly and sincerely, providing for great entertainment with wholesome family values.
Regardless if you are revisiting a childhood favourite or meeting Stitch for the first time on screen like me, this remake offers plenty to enjoy. While it may not break new cinematic ground, it sticks the landing where it counts: it’s heartfelt, fun, and full of character.

Verdict? A solid family film that stays true to its roots, with just enough sparkle to charm new audiences. Go catch it! Lilo & Stitch (2025) is now showing at Singapore cinemas.
