Located on the south west of capital Male, Dhaalu atoll is also known as Southern Nilandhe atoll or Nilandhe Atholhu Dhekunuburi atoll. Kudahuvadhoo as its capital, located on the southern portion of atoll, Dhaalu spreads out 23 kilometer from east to west and 38 kilometer from north to south. With a total population of more than 7000, there are 56 islands in the atoll, seven of which are uninhabited. Hulhudheli and Rinbudhoo are two islands in the atoll which are traditionally well renowned for its jewelry artifacts. The capital island, Kudahuvadhoo, has a domestic airport, named Dhaalu atoll, flying regular domestic flights back and forth to capital Male, along with local ferry services.
Being perfect for scuba diving and underwater exploration for its diverse coral reef houses and aquatic species, the atoll was opened for tourism in 1998. Various islands in the atoll are supposed to have strongest ties with the Buddhist period with credible remains. Alas, none of them have been studied properly though. Olden time architecture works existent in here was excellent. There is a 300 year old mosque made of curved stones on Rinbudhoo island and the old mosque on Kudahuvadhoo island is a clear reflection of finest masonry existent back in the day in the country.
