In this detailed review, I’ll take you through everything you need to know, so you can decide if Four Seasons Kuda Huraa is the right destination for your next trip:

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • One of the standout advantages of Four Seasons Maldives Kuda Huraa is its location. Unlike some Maldives resorts that require long seaplane transfers, this property is a convenient 20-minute speedboat ride from Velana International Airport in Malé. This means less travel time and more time soaking up the sun or diving into turquoise waters. Despite its proximity to the capital, the island still feels like a private paradise. Surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and white sandy beaches, the resort offers a true escape, removed from the hustle and bustle of nearby Malé. This perfect blend of accessibility and exclusivity makes Kuda Huraa an ideal choice for travelers who want convenience without compromising on a remote island experience.
  • The architecture of Four Seasons Resort Maldives Kuda Huraa captures the spirit of the Maldives, combining traditional Maldivian craftsmanship with modern luxury and sustainability principles. The design philosophy is rooted in harmony with the environment, using local materials such as timber, coral stone, and thatch to blend structures seamlessly into the island landscape. Villas and public spaces feature pitched roofs and natural textures to evoke a sense of place while offering contemporary comfort. Large windows and outdoor terraces maximize views of the surrounding ocean and gardens, fostering a connection between indoor and outdoor living. Special attention is paid to privacy and tranquility — overwater villas are spaced generously to ensure guests feel secluded, while beachfront suites are nestled amid lush tropical foliage for an intimate retreat.
  • Four Seasons Maldives at Kuda Huraa opened its doors in 1998, making it one of the original luxury resorts in the Maldives and a pioneer in the country’s upscale tourism industry. Over the past three decades, the property has undergone several thoughtful renovations and expansions to keep up with the high standards of the Four Seasons brand. Each update has been carefully planned to enhance guest comfort and sustainability without losing the island’s original charm and tranquil atmosphere. These improvements have included upgraded accommodations, expanded dining options, and the addition of eco-friendly initiatives to protect the surrounding coral reefs and marine life. As it continues to evolve, the resort honors its heritage while embracing innovations that elevate the island escape experience, which keeps guests returning year after year.
  • The thoughtful layout of Four Seasons Maldives at Kuda Huraa is designed to enhance the guest experience. The resort spans approximately 7.4 hectares and is divided in three distinct areas, each offering its own unique experience:
    • The main island: This is where you’ll find the beachfront villas nestled among lush tropical greenery, providing direct access to pristine white sand beaches. The island also houses the resort’s communal facilities, including the lobby, restaurants, water sports center.
    • The jetty: Extending gracefully over the calm lagoon, the jetty hosts all the overwater villas (with either a sunrise or a sunset view). These accommodations provide unparalleled views of the turquoise waters and easy access to snorkeling and swimming right from their private deck, delivering the quintessential Maldives experience.
    • The private spa island: Separated from the main island, the exclusive spa island offers a serene sanctuary dedicated to wellness and relaxation. Accessible by a short boat ride, it features overwater treatment rooms and tranquil spaces designed to immerse guests in complete tranquility, surrounded by the gentle sounds of the ocean (more on that below).
  • Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa features 96 villas, catering to couples, families, and groups seeking privacy and indulgence. During my holiday, I stayed in a ‘Sunset Water Villa with Pool’. The interior featured a tasteful décor with natural materials like teakwood, soft linens, and woven textures, evoking a warm and relaxing ambiance. The bedroom was fitted with a plush king-sized bed and a daybed positioned along a large window that faced the pool and water. The ensuite bathroom was equipped with a deep soaking bath tub, a rain shower and double vanity. The villa’s standout feature was the private infinity pool on the outdoor deck, offering a refreshing spot to cool off while gazing over the turquoise lagoon. The deck also included comfortable sun lounger and a shaded dining area, perfect for enjoying breakfast, cocktails, or a romantic dinner al fresco.
  • The newly unveiled Three-Bedroom Kuda Estate is the epitome of luxury at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa. This phenomenal beach estate offers unparalleled privacy and elegance, featuring three standalone villas interconnected by open-concept indoor and outdoor spaces. At its heart lies a magnificent pool that gracefully curves around an expansive oceanfront deck, providing breathtaking views of the turquoise waters. The estate’s design reflects a harmonious blend of modern luxury and traditional Maldivian aesthetics, with a crisp palette of whites, aquamarines, and violets, complemented by designer furnishings such as the iconic B&B Italia sofa. Guests are treated to the resort’s renowned “at-home” vibe, complemented by a dedicated personal attendant ensuring seamless service throughout their stay.
  • Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa offers guests not just one, but two stunning swimming pools, each thoughtfully designed to enhance your island experience with varied atmospheres and breathtaking views:
    • Situated on the island southern’s tip, near the overwater villas and the jetty area, the Lagoon Pool is a serene oasis that perfectly complements the tranquil turquoise waters of the surrounding lagoon. This infinity-edge pool is the ideal spot for a refreshing morning swim or a leisurely afternoon dip while soaking up panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. The Lagoon Pool’s calm and peaceful ambiance makes it a favorite for those seeking a quiet retreat away from the more active parts of the resort.
    • Located on the island’s ocean-facing side, the Beach Club Pool is a much larger pool when compared to the Lagoon Pool, making it the perfect spot for families and larger group of friends. Surrounded by swaying palm trees and lush gardens, the Beach Club Pool provides ample space to lounge under the sun or relax in the shade. It’s also conveniently close to the resort’s main dining venues and activity centers, making it a popular spot to gather before or after adventures like snorkeling, surfing, or diving.
  • One of the most enchanting features of Four Seasons Kuda Huraa is its lagoon-side beach, a tranquil stretch of powdery white sand gently kissed by the calm, clear waters of the lagoon. Unlike the resort’s breezy ocean side, where the beach is only accessible to guests staying in one of the villas on this side of the island, the lagoon-side beach offers a serene, sheltered environment ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and leisurely strolls. The beach is dotted with comfortable loungers and shaded daybeds, ensuring all guests – including guests staying in an overwater villa – can soak up the tropical sun or unwind in the shade at their leisure. The surrounding lush greenery and swaying palms create a picture-perfect backdrop that feels like a private slice of paradise in the middle of the blue Indian Ocean.
  • Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa truly spoils guests with a variety of dining experiences that blend local flavors with global cuisines:
    • Set over the water, Baraabaru is an elegant Indian restaurant specializing in rich, aromatic dishes crafted with fresh ingredients. The setting is intimate and romantic – perfect for a candlelit dinner as the sun sets over the horizon.
    • Seafood and meat lovers will adore Kandu Grill, where chefs prepare freshly caught fish and shellfish with a Maldivian twist. The open-air restaurant – set along the main pool – lets guests enjoy the gentle ocean breeze as they savor grilled lobster, coconut crusted prawns or Waguy beef.
    • Café Huraa is a vibrant all-day dining venue that serves a wide selection of international cuisine, from wood-fired pizzas to tropical salads. It’s particularly family-friendly and offers a relaxed atmosphere for breakfast (a combination of a buffet and à la carte dishes), lunch, or dinner.
    • For a more casual vibe, the Reef Club offers Mediterranean-inspired dishes with an emphasis on fresh seafood and seasonal produce. Its beachside location makes it a great spot to enjoy lunch or dinner with your toes in the sand.
    • The resort also offers private beach dining options, which allow guests to enjoy gourmet meals under the stars, complete with personalized menus and attentive service. The weekly themed dinners – such as Maldivian nights or seafood buffets – are also not to be missed.
  • The Island Spa at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa offers one of the most unique wellness experiences in the Maldives. Located on its own private islet just a short boat ride from the main island, this serene sanctuary is dedicated entirely to relaxation, healing, and rejuvenation. The spa features six exquisitely designed overwater treatment rooms, each perched above the turquoise lagoon with glass floors that allow guests to gaze at colorful marine life below during their treatments. The menu is a fusion of Ayurvedic therapies, marine-based treatments, and Maldivian botanical rituals, carefully crafted to promote balance and wellness. Beyond the treatments, the spa offers relaxation lounges, steam rooms, and a healing tent, ensuring a full sensory experience from start to finish. Yoga sessions – including antigravity yoga – are also available, often conducted on decks overlooking the ocean.
  • At Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa, guests can enjoy a wide variety of activities catering to both adventure seekers and those looking to relax. Water enthusiasts can take advantage of complimentary non-motorized sports like snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing, and catamaran sailing, while motorized options such as jet skiing and parasailing are also available. The resort features a PADI Five-Star dive center and a surf school for those eager to explore the vibrant underwater world or catch some waves. For relaxation, guests can indulge in spa treatments, yoga sessions, and sunset cruises. Families are welcomed with educational programs like the Marine Discovery Centre and kids’ activities, while cultural experiences such as cooking classes and visits to nearby local islands offer a deeper connection to Maldivian life.
  • Kuda Huraa Resort is managed by Four Seasons, probably the best known luxury hotel brand in the world. The Toronto-based company has transformed the hospitality industry in a tale of continual innovation, remarkable expansion and a single-minded dedication to the highest of standards. Four Seasons was founded in 1960 by the young architect Isadore Sharp, but the real breakthrough of the brand came in the seventies with the opening of the Four Seasons London. Although the company went public in 1986, the Sharp family – along with a group of like-minded investors such as Bill Gates and Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal – took the company private again in 2007 to protect the integrity of the brand well into the future. Four Seasons currently manages more than 120 hotels and resorts worldwide. The company also offers private jet travel onboard its own Airbus A321 (with all Business Class layout), and will soon launch private ultra-luxe yacht itineraries.
  • A stay at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa can be easily combined with a stay at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, thanks to convenient direct seaplane transfers between the two resorts. Landaa Giraavaru, located in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is the more luxurious and exclusive of the pair, offering expansive villas, pristine beaches, and exceptional marine conservation programs. While Kuda Huraa provides a more intimate and laid-back atmosphere, Landaa Giraavaru pampers guests with opulent indulgence and extensive facilities, including multiple high-end restaurants and a world-class spa. Combining both resorts allows travelers to experience the best of both worlds—a perfectly balanced Maldivian getaway that blends relaxation, adventure, and luxury. This seamless connection makes it easy to customize your trip, whether you want to start with the vibrant marine life and surfing at Kuda Huraa or unwind in ultimate luxury at Landaa Giraavaru.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW
  • One of the advantages of Four Seasons Maldives at Kuda Huraa is its relative closeness to Malé International Airport compared to some other Maldivian resorts. The island can be reached by a scenic 20-minute speedboat ride rather than the longer and more expensive seaplane transfers common elsewhere. While Kuda Huraa is closer to the hustle and bustle of Malé and its surrounding populated areas, the island remains far enough removed to maintain a peaceful and secluded atmosphere. Some guests might notice increased boat traffic or visible activity near the airport area, which contrasts with the complete isolation found on more remote islands. However, the resort still offers a tranquil experience, making it a great choice for travelers who want both convenience and a serene escape.

  • Unlike many other Maldivian resorts that provide bicycles for guests to freely explore the island at their own pace, Four Seasons Maldives at Kuda Huraa does not offer bikes. While the island is compact and walkable, some guests might miss the fun and freedom that comes with cycling around the lush pathways and beaches. That said, the resort does provide a 24/7 buggy service, which is convenient and ensures guests can get around comfortably without having to walk long distances, especially in the heat. However, for those who enjoy casual exercise or leisurely rides, the lack of bicycles is a noticeable drawback.

  • One unique aspect of Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa is the presence of a local island right next to the resort island. While this offers guests a chance to experience authentic Maldivian culture through excursions, it can also impact the resort’s sense of isolation. Some guests may notice local fishing boats or occasional glimpses of activity from the local island, which contrasts with the typical private-island resort experience. Also, from certain parts of the resort—particularly some of the restaurants—you can see concrete buildings and infrastructure on the local island.
  • While Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa is a well-maintained and beautifully kept property, it is one of the older resorts in the Maldives. Some areas and design elements may feel a bit dated compared to newer, more modern resorts. However, the resort’s ongoing renovations and attentive upkeep ensure that it remains comfortable and inviting, preserving its classic island charm without feeling rundown.
  • One limitation for guests who love exploring on foot is that you cannot walk all the way around the island on which Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa is located. The eastern beach is privately reserved for the villas on that side, making it inaccessible to other guests. Additionally, the eastern side’s coral reef is often exposed during low tide, which can limit swimming or snorkeling in that area. As a result, only the western beach offers full public access and easy water entry.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best weather in the Maldives is between January and April, which also means high season (and skyrocketing hotel rates). The monsoon runs from May to October, peaking in June. It is worth paying higher prices and sticking to the dry season as there is nothing to do on a rainy day except drink, eat, work out, or scuba dive. Especially November and December, which are often labelled as dry season months, have been very unsettled in recent years.

HOW TO GET THERE

Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa is easily reached by a 20 min speedboat ride from Male International Airport (MLE). Check the Wikipedia page of Male International Airport for an updated list of airlines that offer flights to Male International Airport.
