Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Closing For Annual Maintenance

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) will temporarily suspend operations for its annual maintenance from Monday, 28 July to Sunday, 3 August 2025. During this period, all commercial activity at both the Upper and Lower Stations will be closed to the public.

Here is everything you need to know:

Annual Maintenance

This planned shutdown is part of TMACC’s ongoing commitment to safety, reliability, and excellence in service. Each year, the Cableway undergoes routine inspections and essential upgrades to ensure the system continues to operate to the highest international safety standards.

Selma Hercules, Executive Director of TMACC, said the annual shutdown “allows us to carry out key maintenance tasks that ensure the safety of our visitors and staff, and the continued efficiency of our world-class operation.”

How It Affects Visitors

The Cableway, along with all commercial and public outlets and operations at the Upper and Lower Stations, will remain closed to the public.

This includes VIEWS by De Grendel, TEN67 Eatery, KLOUD Bar, TAP Bar, the Shop at the Top and other retail outlets, as well as the ablution facilities.

Hikers can still enjoy a trek up Table Mountain, with many routes and walkways accessible. However, all facilities at the summit and base stations will be closed during the shutdown.

TMACC advises that hikers should be mindful of changing weather conditions when embarking on a hike up Table Mountain, as they will need to hike back down.

“As the cable cars will be completely out of commission, no trips up or down will take place, so hikers must prepare to return down on foot. We strongly advise carrying sufficient water, snacks, and appropriate gear for your hike,” TMACC said in a statement.

South African locals with birthdays in July or August can still redeem their free birthday return ticket during their birthday month, as usual, outside of the shutdown period. The Cape Town attraction will reopen, weather permitting, on Monday, 4 August 2025.
