Question 1: How do you pronounce XXXX anyway?

XXXX is actually pronounced as Four-ex or Fourex

Question 2: How did XXXX get its name?

The number of Xs actually indicate the quality of the beer in late 1800s, early 1900s. When the creators of XXXX brewed their first beers in 1878, they received three Xs. In 1893, their recipe were refined further to improve the quality and gain the fourth X.

Question 3: How was XXXX started?

Two brothers, Nicholas and Edward Fitzgerald, had one goal in life: to create the finest ales known to man. They bought an old distillery and on the 13th of September of that year, the first beer was sold. And so the Castlemaine Brewery was born, known today as the home of XXXX.

Question 4: What are some of the famous XXXX beers?

XXXX BITTER, which has not changed in recipe since it was created in 1924.
XXXX GOLD, created in the 1990s, a mid-strength lager that would go on to become the best-selling beer in Australia.

At level 1, you’ll be greeted by this vintage XXXX truck that had “Castlemaine” painted on it – the place where XXXX started to brew its beers (which, technically at that time was only XXX since they had yet to receive their fourth X).

Upstairs, you’ll find an event space of sorts and also where the brewery tour starts. On the same level, you’ll also find the bar and the restaurant where you can order the beers as well as the bar grubs.

Tasty Beers with a Rich History in Queensland! — XXXX Ale House & Brewery Brisbane Milton – XXXX ULTRA and XXXX BITTER ($18.5)

XXXX Ale House & Brewery Brisbane Milton - Wagyu Burger ($22) — XXXX Ale House & Brewery Brisbane Milton – Wagyu Burger ($22)

This time, we ordered the XXXX BITTER and XXXX ULTRA – both for $18.5. A little expensive but we really did enjoy XXXX BITTER. Refreshing and had the bitter hoppy aftertaste that we love. ULTRA on the other hand was a crisp lager. As for the Wagyu Burger ($22), we enjoyed the patty which had rich beefy flavours and the pickle was sweet – that even Kate enjoyed. The burger also came with beer battered fries that were very crispy as well.

Playing Pool at XXXX Ale House and Brewery Brisbane / Milton

The premise has a relaxed vibe and you could even head over to the pool table and play a couple of games for free. We also noticed staff working at XXXX heading over to the bar to get some drinks – probably their daily entitlement and we could see them chilling out and enjoying conversations at the “garden” area at the al fresco area. The staff were also really friendly, making jokes and making us feel right at home when we visited.

Thanks to Kate, we were able to visit XXXX brewery, one of the oldest (if not the oldest) brewery in Queensland. Soaking in the history and tasting the history as well. Now we understand why XXXX BITTER’s recipe remains the same and is one of the more popular beers at XXXX Ale House & Brewery!
