Thailand’s latest restrictions are being introduced amid escalating border tensions with Cambodia, following a brief exchange of gunfire between soldiers from both nations in a contested border region on May 28, which resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, announced today that the kingdom will strengthen its border controls with neighboring Cambodia in order to address ‘transnational crime.’
After a high-level government meeting, Paetongtarn said that curbs on cross-border travel for both vehicles and pedestrians will be implemented, including cutting checkpoints’ operating hour.
Prime Minister stated that border crossings in seven provinces along the Thai-Cambodian border will be restricted to essential travel, such as for students, medical patients, and necessary goods.
The prime minister announced that Thailand will stop exports of goods, particularly fuel and electricity, that facilitate illegal operations across the border and will contemplate halting fuel shipments to Cambodia that are suspected of being utilized in criminal activities.
Internet services and underwater internet cables linked to Cambodia’s government and military offices will also be deactivated, she added.
In response to Paetongtarn’s announcement, the Thai military announced tightening of security measures on border crossing with Cambodia, allowing only essential and humanitarian travel.
