Today: Top 10 most LGBTQ+ friendly travel destinations in the world

June is Pride Month – a month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ communities all around the world. LGBTQ+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning. The “+” is an inclusive symbol that represents other sexual orientations and gender identities. Pride Month is about love, acceptance, and equality. It’s also a time to raise awareness of the challenges many in the LGBTQ+ community still face today.

While some countries have made significant progress, LGBTQ+ rights vary widely across the globe. For example, the Netherlands became the first country to legalize same-sex marriage 20 years ago. Since then, 28 more countries — mostly in Western Europe — have followed. However, in 70 countries, homosexuality remains a crime. In six of these, all United Nations members, it can even be punishable by death. This means that for many LGBTQ+ travelers, choosing a travel destination can involve serious risks and added stress compared to heterosexual travelers.

The good news? The world is slowly but steadily becoming more inclusive — and today, there are more LGBTQ+ friendly travel destinations than ever before. Here’s my list of the top 10 most gay-friendly travel destinations around the world.

10. MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY

Tucked between Argentina and Brazil, Uruguay is South America’s smallest country — and one of its most progressive. Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1934. In 2004, anti-discrimination laws were introduced to protect LGBTQ+ individuals, and by 2013, same-sex marriage was officially legalized. Nearly half the population lives in Montevideo, the relaxed yet vibrant capital city. With its rich cultural scene and beautiful Atlantic Ocean beaches, Montevideo offers the perfect mix of urban life and seaside charm. Thanks to Uruguay’s compact size, Montevideo also makes an ideal base for exploring the rest of the country. Head west to discover the historic cities of Salto, Paysandú, and the UNESCO-listed Colonia del Sacramento. For a more lively getaway, take day trips to Punta del Este, La Paloma, or Punta del Diablo — all famous for their stunning coastlines and energetic nightlife.

9. TEL AVIV, ISRAEL

The Middle East is often considered one of the least LGBTQ+ friendly regions in the world. In countries like Iran, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia, same-sex relationships can even be punishable by death. Israel stands out as a progressive exception when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights. Its vibrant coastal city, Tel Aviv, has become a global hotspot for gay tourism. Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Tel Aviv is known for its stunning beaches, energetic nightlife, and thriving LGBTQ+ scene. The city’s open-minded, welcoming vibe sets it apart from many other cities in the region — including some within Israel itself. Tel Aviv not only embraces gay travelers with open arms, but also serves as a safe haven for LGBTQ+ individuals from nearby countries where being openly queer can be life-threatening. However, it is important to note that due to the ongoing war and escalating conflict in the region, Tel Aviv is currently best avoided for travel; the heightened tensions and security risks have significantly impacted safety in the city and surrounding areas.

8. TAIPEI, TAIWAN

Situated off the southeastern coast of China, Taiwan is one of the most progressive countries in Asia — especially when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights. In 2019, it made history by becoming the first Asian nation to legalize same-sex marriage. While some rural areas may still hold conservative views, Taipei — the capital and cultural heart of Taiwan — is an incredibly welcoming destination for gay travelers. This vibrant city combines tradition and innovation, offering everything from towering skyscrapers like Taipei 101 to the world’s largest collection of Chinese art. With its tropical climate, gourmet street food, lush beaches, famous hot springs, and some of Asia’s most eclectic nightlife, Taipei delivers an unforgettable travel experience. For LGBTQ+ travelers, it’s a destination where you can feel both safe and celebrated.

7. NEW YORK, USA

“If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere!” — and for LGBTQ+ travelers, New York City is truly a place where anything feels possible. The Big Apple defines urban life at its most exciting, offering world-class museums, iconic shopping, unforgettable performances, and an endless array of dining options. Home to one of the largest and most dynamic queer communities in the world, New York boasts a vibrant gay nightlife and a proudly liberal spirit. It’s a city that has seen it all — and celebrates everyone. NYC also holds a special place in LGBTQ+ history. The 1969 Stonewall Riots, which took place at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, are widely seen as the spark that ignited the modern gay rights movement. Whether you’re here for culture, community, or celebration, New York welcomes you with open arms.

6. ICELAND

In Iceland, adventure is part of everyday life. With its dramatic landscapes of mountains, volcanoes, glaciers, rivers, lakes, and lava caves, this island nation is an absolute paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. But beyond its natural wonders, Iceland is also one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly countries in the world. Few places offer such widespread acceptance and love for people across the spectrum of gender and sexuality. Iceland boasts near-total legal equality, strong LGBTQ+ representation in politics and media, and a supportive infrastructure that uplifts queer voices. It’s no wonder the country is often described as a rainbow paradise — and a top destination for gay travelers and gender minorities alike. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls or northern lights, Iceland offers both unforgettable adventures and a true sense of belonging.

5. CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa made history in 2006 by becoming the first—and still the only—country in Africa to legalize same-sex marriage. That landmark decision came 16 years after the first Johannesburg Pride parade, marking a steady, courageous journey toward equality. Today, the “Rainbow Nation” remains the most LGBTQ+ friendly country on the continent. While parts of South Africa still hold conservative views, cities like Cape Town offer a safe, welcoming space for queer travelers to be themselves. Cape Town is a dream destination: think breathtaking beaches, majestic mountains, world-class vineyards, scenic coastal drives, and a vibrant nightlife scene filled with trendy bars and restaurants. Add to that some of the best hospitality and service you’ll find anywhere, and it’s easy to see why Cape Town is considered one of the hottest city breaks in the world—especially for LGBTQ+ travelers.

4. SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Travelers from around the world flock to Sydney to experience its rich multicultural vibe, surf some of Australia’s best beaches, and admire iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The city boasts fantastic hospitality, with lively bars and restaurants, alongside nearby national parks offering pristine wilderness and some of Australia’s oldest historic sites. In Sydney—and throughout Australia—discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression is strictly prohibited. LGBTQ+ travelers can feel safe and welcomed here. Over the past few decades, Sydney has earned its reputation as the gay capital of the Southern Hemisphere. It’s famous for its vibrant Mardi Gras festival, celebrated gay icons like Ian Thorpe and Matthew Mitcham, and cultural touchstones such as the film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

3. VANCOUVER, CANADA

Canada stands out as the most progressive and welcoming country for LGBTQ+ people in the Americas. This is especially clear in Toronto, the nation’s largest city, which was home to some of the world’s first legal same-sex marriages (retroactively recognized). However, for travelers, Vancouver on the west coast might steal the spotlight. Surrounded by majestic mountains, sparkling ocean views, and lush rainforests, Vancouver is widely considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world — and a place where everyone can truly be themselves. To experience Vancouver’s thriving LGBTQ+ community, visitors should explore two key neighborhoods: the West End, including the famous Davie Village, and Commercial Drive. Both offer a diverse mix of restaurants, cozy coffee shops, lively pubs, and boutiques — all warmly welcoming to everyone.

2. MYKONOS, GREECE

Since Jackie Onassis began visiting this stunning Aegean island in the 1970s, Mykonos has earned a reputation for glamour and vibrant nightlife. Each year, stylish new hotels, beach bars, and restaurants continue to spring up, adding to the island’s appeal. Despite its modern allure, Mykonos has beautifully preserved its authentic Cycladic charm, with iconic century-old windmills, winding cobblestone streets, and traditional whitewashed houses. While many come for the lively party scene and breathtaking beaches, Mykonos is also celebrated for its open, liberal atmosphere. This welcoming spirit has made it a top travel destination for LGBTQ+ travelers. Alongside Ibiza, Gran Canaria, and Sitges, Mykonos is one of Europe’s famous “big four” gay summer hotspots — but it stands out as the most stylish and trendy of them all.

1. SWEDEN

Sweden is renowned worldwide for its open-mindedness and commitment to diversity and inclusion, making it an excellent travel destination for LGBTQ+ travelers from everywhere. The capital, Stockholm, is a stunning and sophisticated city known for hosting Stockholm Pride, Scandinavia’s largest Pride festival and reportedly Sweden’s biggest annual event. Another gem is Gothenburg, a vibrant city with a strong LGBTQ+ community and a gateway to the breathtaking archipelago and countryside of West Sweden. Food lovers will especially appreciate Gothenburg, which boasts the world’s highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants relative to its size. No matter where you go—from cosmopolitan cities to the magical landscapes of Lapland—Sweden warmly welcomes travelers of all backgrounds, identities, and interests.
