Did you know Observatory gets its name from the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO)? Stretching down from the north-facing slopes of Devil’s Peak, Observatory, or Obs, as the locals call it, buzzes with creative energy and a distinctly bohemian spirit.
This eclectic neighbourhood is a melting pot of cultures, brimming with quirky thrift stores, hip bars, cool cafés and rich history at every turn. Whether you’re into vintage finds, indie music or just soaking up a laid-back vibe, Obs has something for everyone.
Here’s everything you can look forward to on your next visit:

Sonder Café
Step into Sonder Café, a local favourite tucked away on Lower Main Road in the heart of Observatory. It’s one of those spots that instantly makes you feel at home. Think minimal interiors, plenty of greenery, and the most delicious New York-style bagels and stacked sourdough sandwiches. It’s the kind of place where you can sip on a brewed flat white while journalling, catching up with a friend, or just people-watching through the big windows.
